How can I prevent mildew on wood furniture?

Hello, glad to be back after a long while... We have a country house which is quite damp and where we go infrequently (once a month) As a consequence, there is often white mildew or mold on wood furniture, doors and stairs, especially in winter. I have no trouble getting it off, but would like to know if there is a "gimmick" to prevent it from coming back... white vinegar ? Thanks for any help...
