Have you ever been to a funeral where they put the dead person in Hell from the pulpit?

For example my uncle was a drunken sailor all his life. A failed marriage...a Catholic that never went to church. I went to the funeral at a huge Cathedral in St.Paul , Minn and the priest launched him to heaven. The Bible states that Jesus made a covenant with those that stuck by Jesus during his trials on earth..and that liars theives, drunks would not inherit God's Kingdom? Confusing!!!
