Powdery Mildew?

Last year I grew squash, canteloup and water melons and pumpkins next to each other in my garden. But the canteloup didn't make it. They were small and tiny. I live in Indiana if it helps to know---but the other plants ended up with powdery mildew and I'd like to know how to avoid it. Can anyone help?
