Why do black people in the United States insist on being called African-Americans?

I have travelled extensively through the years and found that in England, black people are called Brits, in Germany, Germans, in France, French and so on. It seems to me to continue to point out our differences instead of focusing on our commonality will keep this country divided instead of uniting us.
